One thing we know for sure is that change is constant – our bodies show us this overtime as we age and live. How you respond to changes in your body and how well you develop healthy responses to life as its unfolds contributes to your satisfaction and contentment with your life.
Developed by Baxter Bell, MD and Nino Zolotov, Yoga for Healthy Aging (YFHA) is a practice on how to use yoga to cultivate your physical, mental and emotional health for a lifetime of well-being. This is an informative and useful approach to practicing yoga at any age, but especially relevant for those who are in mid-life and older.
During this six-week workshop you will learn and practice:
- The scientific background that explains how and why yoga supports healthy ageing
- Essential yoga poses, sequences, and other health-promoting practices
- Movement sequences for strength, flexibility, balance, and agility
- Yoga for managing stress, optimizing brain health, and experiencing equanimity
Class 1: Introduction to Yoga for Healthy Aging with active practice of its basic components. What is aging and what are the components to healthy aging? Explore how yoga influences your healthy lifespan through asana, stress management and yoga philosophy. Learn about the four essential physical skills and yoga poses that support these abilities. We will sample some of the practices to illustrate the concepts. The class will close with questions and a restorative practice.
Class 2: Strength based asana practice with restorative poses, pranayama and meditation.
Class 3: Flexibility based asana practice with restorative poses, pranayama and meditation.
Class 4: Balance based asana practice with restorative poses, pranayama and meditation.
Class 5: Agility based asana practice with restorative poses, pranayama and meditation.
Class 6: Integrated asana practice with restorative poses, pranayama and meditation.
More about Kathy:
Kathy trained under Baxter Bell and Melina Meza to become certified to teach Yoga for Healthy Aging in January 2017. Kathy’s approach to teaching yoga is to help cultivate internal awareness of one’s body, mind and spirit in a way that is respectful of the wonderful diversity in each student’s journey/life, so that space is created inside for the seeds of what is sought: loving kindness, self-care, peace, equanimity, health, compassion, community.
She completed the 200-hour teacher training program in 2015 through the Sun and Moon studio in Northern Va. Kathy’s teaching incorporates the traditional Eight Limb Path along with a focus on self-care using energy work, Yin Yoga, Myofascial Release, Viniyoga and Insight Yoga practices.
